INTRODUCTION
The World Standards Cooperation was established in 2001 by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), in order to strengthen and advance the voluntary consensus-based international standards systems of ISO, IEC and ITU.
The International Cooperation on Education about Standardization (ICES) is a network of individuals and organizations interested in education about standardization. ICES.aims to promote education about standardization and improve its quality and attractiveness for all stakeholders.
The ICES Conference 2012 and the WSC Academic Day 2012 to be organized in conjunction on 10-11 May 2012 in Bali, Indonesia, intend to give continuity to the ICES and WSC events organized in previous years (Academic Week 2010 in Geneva, ICES Conference 2011 and Academic Day 2011 in Hangzhou, China).
The ICES Conference 2012 aims at promoting the quality and attractiveness of education about standardization by sharing (best) practices. The WSC Academic Day 2012 is conceived by ISO, IEC and ITU to promote dialogue between universities and the international standards community, to raise awareness and to foster cooperation and joint initiatives.
The National Standardization Agency of Indonesia (BSN) has been paying serious attention to standards education since 2007 by developing cooperation with Universities in Indonesia. Indonesia joined ICES in March 2009 and participated actively in the ICES Workshop and WSC Academic Week 2010 in Geneva and 2011 in Hangzhou. BSN is very proud to host the ICES Conference and WSC Academic Day 2012 event that will be held on 10-11 May 2012 at Discovery Kartika Plaza Hotel, Kuta, Bali.
In addition, the Chairman of the National Standardization Agency of Indonesia is chairing ISO DEVCO for 2011-2012. One of the expected outputs from the implementation of the activities under the Action Plan for developing countries 2011-2015 aims at better integrating the subject of standardization in educational curricula.
To support this objective, ISO is organizing a series of regional workshops aiming at supporting developing countries in defining programmes targeting universities and at developing or strengthening courses on education about standardization in their countries.
The first of these events, covering the South Asia, and the East and South-East Asia regions, is co-sponsored by KATS (the national standards body of the Republic of Korea). KATS and KSA (Korean Standards Association) are particularly interested in education about standardization. Over the past several years they have developed significant programmes to promote courses about standards in universities and schools, and are willing to share the Korean experience and approach with national standards bodies and universities from other countries.
To increase efficiency and build synergy, the event is organized in conjunction with the ICES Conference and WSC Academic Day. BSN will therefore host two-and-a-half days regional ISO/KATS workshop in Bali on 7-9 May 2012. Participation in the ISO/KATS workshop is by invitation only and funded by the ISO developing countries fund.
